Apple CEO Steve Jobs envisioned a touchscreen to interact with a computer so that users can type directly onto the display, replacing the keyboard and mouse. While reviewing the prototype he came up with the idea of implementing the same in a mobile phone and the touch screen era of mobile phones began. The project codenamed Project Purple 2 and began in 2005.

The original iPhone was introduced by Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007 at the Macworld Conference & Expo. Steve Jobs said "Today, we're introducing three revolutionary products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device.
