Walmart Lying About "Made In The USA" Products?
(RTTNews) - World's largest retailer Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (WMT) is said to be brewing trouble after a report from an advertising watchdog group claimed that its website had more than 100 products that were incorrectly marketed as "Made in the USA" and "Assembled in the USA."
According to a letter from Truth in Advertising, Inc. or TINA.org last week to Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, the nonprofit consumer advocacy organization said an investigation of www.walmart.com has revealed that it is marketing products through the use of false and/or deceptive labels.
TINA.org noted that Walmart's use of its USA labels and specifications is false and deceptive, and therefore in violation of the Federal Trade Commission's standards for making U.S.-origin claims, as well as Section 5(a) of the FTC Act.
The organization has warned Walmart to desist from misleading consumers looking to purchase American-made products with their false Made in USA labeling on its website.
TINA.org also warn that it will notify the FTC about their findings on the USA labeling and marketing issues if Walmart does not confirm in writing about its intend to remove all false and misleading labeling on their website.
The investigations make it clear that Walmart's website is mired in USA labeling errors. Some of the products being marketed through the website are made in China, Germany or imported from elsewhere according to the product packaging, but are labeled as "Made in the USA" on the Walmart website.
It was also found that Walmart's website displays product specifications that, in some cases, misrepresent the origin of the products and are therefore false. Products that are showing Made in Germany on the product packaging, are indicated as assembled in the USA and that all of its components are from the USA, on the website.
TINA.org said it has compiled over 100 examples of such errors, as well as an expert report by a visual perception and Web interface specialist in support of its contentions.
