The 2026 Social Security COLA Announcement Made Me Wonder: Should Social Security Change How It Calculates the Increase?

After a delay due to the government shutdown that began on Oct. 1, Social Security announced its most anticipated change of the year: The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Beginning on Jan. 1, 2026, Social Security recipients can expect a 2.8% increase to their monthly benefits.Retirees will tell you that any increase is better than no increase.
