Taylor Fladgate: Celebrating 325 years of history on the high seas

Releases limited edition to celebrate the milestone anniversary

TORONTO, Oct. 30 2017 /CNW/ - To celebrate its 325th anniversary, the Taylor Fladgate house has created a limited edition of a commemorative Port. A unique bottle has been specially produced based on a bottle made at around the time of Taylor Fladgate's foundation. It is the earliest example of an intact dated bottle bearing the merchant's mark, in this case the "4" and "XX" symbol still used as Taylor Fladgate's trademark to this day.

"Taylor Fladgate is one of the oldest Port houses and has remained independent and family managed throughout its history," explains Adria Bridge, Taylor Fladgate's Managing Director. "It is acknowledged, worldwide, as one of the most respected classic wine houses because of its perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit and continuity of purpose of successive generations."

"To produce this exclusive limited edition blend, Taylor Fladgate has drawn on their extensive reserves of old cask-aged Ports and selected individual component wines originally set aside for the company's 10, 20, 30 and 40-Year-Old Tawnies," says Stephen Marentette, Ontario Sales and Marketing Director at Sylvestre Wines & Spirits. "We are thrilled to have the bottles in Ontario, where the Port category has been steadily growing over the last several years."

"This opulent and seductive aged tawny is a fitting tribute to Taylor Fladgate's 325th anniversary and to the firm's expertise in ageing and blending the finest cask aged ports," says David Guimaraens, Taylor Fladgate's winemaker.

This Port pairs particularly well with toasted almonds or dark chocolate, as well as being an excellent accompaniment to mature blue cheeses, preferably served slightly chilled. This highly collectable one time only limited edition to commemorate Taylor Fladgate's 325th anniversary is available at the LCBO now and retails for $46.95.

Tasting Notes:
Deep chestnut brown core encircled by a narrow brick rim. A rich figgy nose with a background of toffee and mocha, notes of plum and apricot, spicy hints of black pepper, nutmeg and fleeting scents of jasmine, all come together in a heady complex harmony. Dense and luscious on the palate, with a wonderful velvety smoothness. The mellow flavours of butterscotch and molasses merge with rich jammy red berry flavours, a perfect blend of youth and maturity.

About Taylor Fladgate:
Taylor Fladgate is one of the oldest Port houses, established in 1692, and celebrates its 325th anniversary this year. It has remained a family business since its foundation and is dedicated entirely to the production of the finest quality Port, from the planting of the vineyards and the cultivation of the grapes to the making, ageing, blending and bottling of the wines. The family's commitment to the future of Port is demonstrated by its determination to preserve the unique environment of the Douro Valley through the promotion of sustainable and responsible viticulture.

The company is known above all for its elegant and long lived Vintage Ports, which are amongst the world's most recognised, sought after and collectible wines. They are drawn from the firm's three distinguished "quintas" or estates, Vargellas, Terra Feita and Junco.

Taylor Fladgate pioneered the LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) category and continues to be the category reference worldwide. It also pioneered dry white Port with the release in 1934 of Chip Dry, the first Port of this style, and was the first to develop the Single Quinta Vintage category.

Taylor Fladgate is also regarded as one of the leading producers of Aged Tawnies and holds one of the most extensive reserves of cask aged Port.
