SunTrust Announces Planned Transition in Washington D.C. and Atlanta Area Banking Leadership
ATLANTA, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SunTrust Banks, Inc. has announced a transition in the leadership of its banking units based in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, two of SunTrust's highest profile and highest growth markets. The moves are part of an orderly transition plan occasioned by the announced retirement in mid-2006 of SunTrust's long-service Greater Washington region senior executive, Peter F. Nostrand.
- Mr. Nostrand, 58, currently chairman, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Greater Washington, has announced plans to retire on June 30, 2006. Mr. Nostrand will remain chairman of SunTrust Greater Washington until his retirement in June, at which time he will be named Chairman Emeritus and continue to represent SunTrust in certain business development and community affairs capacities. - J. Scott Wilfong, 55, currently president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Atlanta, will succeed Mr. Nostrand as president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Greater Washington effective on October 1, 2005, and will assume the additional position of chairman on June 30. - Gary Peacock, Jr., 43, currently senior vice president and treasurer of SunTrust Banks, Inc., will succeed Mr. Wilfong as president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Atlanta, effective October 1, 2005. SunTrust said a comprehensive search is being conducted for a successor to Mr. Peacock's position as treasurer.

Biographical Profiles
Peter F. Nostrand is the chairman, president and CEO of SunTrust, Greater Washington. Mr. Nostrand's career began in 1973 with United Virginia Bank, now SunTrust. He became the regional President in August 1995. Over his 32 years with SunTrust, Mr. Nostrand has worked in the International Division, the National Division, Richmond's Middle Market Lending area, the Energy Division, the Asset Based Division, Leasing, Greater Washington's Commercial Division and Greater Washington's Retail Division.
Active in many professional and civic organizations, Mr. Nostrand is the past chair of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, past chair of the Greater Washington Initiative, and twice past campaign chair of the United Way of the National Capital Area. He currently serves as chairman of the Christmas Pageant of Peace, Inc., and is also a member of the board of directors of HEROES, Inc., Local Initiative Support Coalition, the Washington Airports Task Force, Mesa Air Group, Inc. headquartered in Phoenix, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Pentagon Memorial Fund. He is also an honorary United States Park Police Officer.
Mr. Nostrand holds a Premier Degre from the University of Paris, a BA from Amherst College and a M. Ed. from the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of National Commercial Lending Graduate School of the University of Oklahoma and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He has also attended executive management courses at Harvard and Leadership at the Peak, conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado.
J. Scott Wilfong is president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Atlanta which includes SunTrust banking activities in metro Atlanta, Gainesville and Athens, Georgia.
A 33-year veteran of the banking industry, Mr. Wilfong previously served as president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Maryland. Prior to joining a SunTrust predecessor in 1997, Mr. Wilfong worked as senior vice president and commercial division manager at First Union National Bank in Maryland. Prior to that, he was a group head responsible for retail, middle market and small business activities at First National Bank of Maryland, which is now M&T Bank. Mr. Wilfong began his banking career with Equitable Trust Company in 1972.
Active in the community, Mr. Wilfong serves on the boards of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, Central Atlanta Progress, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Police Foundation, The Community Foundation, One Ninety One Club of Atlanta, and the Buckhead Coalition, Inc., the Marcus Institute and St. Joseph's Hospital. He is a chairman of the Economic Development Committee for the Metropolitan Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and serves on its Executive Committee. He is a trustee of Mount St. Mary's College and Agnes Scott College.
Mr. Wilfong earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from Mount St. Mary's College and an MBA from Loyola College.
Gary Peacock, Jr. currently serves as senior vice president and treasurer of SunTrust Banks, Inc. In this capacity, Mr. Peacock is responsible for SunTrust's investment portfolio, short- and long-term funding, asset and liability management, liquidity management, funds transfer pricing, and economic capital business units. Additionally, he is a member of SunTrust Equity Partners.
Prior to being named treasurer in 2004, Mr. Peacock was director of investor relations and corporate communications since February 2001. As treasurer, he maintained executive oversight responsibility for these areas. He began his career with SunTrust in July 2000 as the strategic finance officer for the retail line of business. Mr. Peacock has been in banking for 20 years and has worked for other financial institutions in the areas of bank
president/CEO, head of retail banking, bank operations, finance and strategic consulting and consumer marketing.
Mr. Peacock earned a bachelor's of science in finance from the University of Florida. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his master's of business administration in finance.
