Macrovision’s New Program Guide Allows CE Manufacturers to Create a Homepage for the Digital Home

Today at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Macrovision Solutions Corporation (NASDAQ:MVSN), a digital entertainment technology leader, announced its next generation Interactive Program Guide (IPG) that can help enable access to broadcast, personal and premium content from one screen. The new solution provides a framework for CE manufacturers to build devices that can use the guide as a central source for finding and playing television shows, Internet delivered video and music as well as accessing and managing content from consumers’ personal media libraries. This next-generation IPG, being developed under the project name "Neon”, marks an important milestone in the evolution towards a seamless and uniquely simple digital home entertainment experience for consumers.

Today’s complex entertainment environment requires consumers to switch devices every time they access a different type of media. To address this issue, Neon helps create an enhanced user experience for accessing content by providing an underlying standards-based technology framework to simplify the process of playing music, downloading movies and viewing photos on the TV directly from the home PC or other DLNA-compatible storage devices.

"Although the future of digital entertainment depends on access to content anytime and anywhere, the central hub for consumers will continue to be their living rooms,” said Michael Wolf, Research Director, Digital Home and Media, ABI Research. "The consumer no longer wants to access just their pay-TV content on the large screen, but to also interact with personal media and web content as well. Macrovision’s new IPG solution will allow CE device manufacturers to enable this, helping to create new ways for people to interact with all forms of digital media throughout the home.”

"Macrovision is taking full advantage of the new connected capabilities built into televisions and recording devices. Our flexible, standards-based approach in our IPG makes it straightforward for our CE partners to deliver digital entertainment products that consumers crave,” said Steve Shannon, EVP of Product Management, Macrovision. "This product demonstrates our commitment to leading the evolution of the digital home and to working with CE manufacturers and the content community to transform home entertainment.”

Neon features include:

  • Rich program descriptors and cover art for TV shows
  • A personalized TV "dashboard" called My Guide
  • DVR functions for recording and playback of broadcast TV
  • Smart Recommendations to help consumers discover new programs
  • Secure streaming of premium Internet content over the home network

In addition, Neon features graphical rich interactive advertising for promoting relevant program and products to consumers. This capability offers new, recurring advertising revenue opportunities for CE manufacturers.
