Leg Cramps Take Seattle Man off World Record Pace on Nautilus Treadmil
Feature Editors/Lifestyle Editors/Sports Editors
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2005--For 26 miles -- the equivalent of a marathon -- everything looked perfect for Geoff Weber to break his own world record on a new Nautilus(R) Commercial Series T914 Treadmill. Then the cramps came.
Nevertheless, Weber finished the 50 kilometer run (31 miles) just 13 minutes above his own world record of 3 hours, 46 minutes, and 12 seconds, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. He also walked and jogged another 24 miles in seven-and-a-half hours before a steady stream of fitness club leaders, Navy representatives, USA Track and Field representatives, and his wife and three children who joined him for part of the event on treadmills nearby.
"Sometimes you're the windshield, and sometimes you're the bug," said an upbeat Weber who said cramps in his calves and hamstrings won't prevent him from another attempt at breaking the 50 kilometer, 50 mile and 100 kilometer records in about seven hours and forty-five minutes. "No matter what your mind says, sometimes your body says you can't go that far or that long. There's nothing better than having a successful run. It was a good warm up for next time."
His first appointment after the run was a warm embrace with his family and some time with his massage therapist.
"I know I need to keep working on my diet and sleep patterns leading into these types of activities," said Weber, who told observers during his world record attempt that he still hopes to run across America and participate in some extreme running events.
After observing Weber throughout the day, professional fitness trainer and Nautilus Institute advisor Jay Blahnik said, "Here is a man who just seven years ago considered himself overweight and unable to run a single mile. Today, he ran 50 miles, about two marathons. That should inspire everyone who is not exercising to believe that they can get on the road to a healthy lifestyle. All you have to do is start."
For his efforts, Nautilus, Inc. presented Weber with an owner's certificate for the first model of its new line of treadmills that were introduced at the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association here.
"Geoff Weber and his family embody the Nautilus spirit," said Tim Hawkins, the company's Chief Marketing Officer, who presented Weber with a special Nautilus Inspiration Award. "We all were inspired by his commitment and his positive attitude, and we know he serves as a powerful role model for millions of Americans who are striving to lead a fit and healthy lifestyle. When he's ready to make another attempt, we'll certainly be there."
