L-3 Communications Announces Teaming with United Defense Industries, Inc. for the Development of UDI Course Correcting Fuze for Cannon Artillery

    Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 2005--L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its BT Fuze Products division is a member of the United Defense Industries (UDI) led team to develop a cost effective way to improve cannon artillery accuracy by utilizing a two directional course correcting fuze (CCF) capable of employment on 155mm and 105mm projectiles.
CCF fuzing is a revolutionary concept in artillery weaponry that offers near precision guidance, enables projectiles to impact long range targets within 30-50 meters, and is designed to be fielded on all current inventory projectiles. Before a CCF-equipped round is fired, the target's coordinates are programmed into the fuze. After the round is fired, the CCF guides the projectile to the target by deploying three different types of brakes that adjust the projectile's range and direction toward the intended target.
The UDI-led fuze program is being entirely financed by the CCF team of Bofors Defence, Rockwell Collins and BT Fuze Products. BT Fuze is a recognized developer and producer of gun launched fuzing and recently commenced production of its 1,000,000th electronic time artillery fuze for the U.S. military. BT Fuze successfully passed 45 consecutive production lots over a five year period with an overall 99.86% fuze reliability in acceptance testing -- an achievement earning the L-3 division and their associated government program management the U.S. Army's Research, Development, and Engineering Center's Commander's Award for best "Integrated Product Team" (IPT) in 2003 and 2004.
