Google Unveils Android Pay

(RTTNews) - Google Inc. (GOOG, GOOGL) on Thursday unveiled a new payment service and also security upgrades to its Android software, as the tech giant takes on rivals like Apple Inc (AAPL).

At its annual developers' conference in San Francisco, Google unveiled Android M, the new version of its mobile software, and which will include Android Pay.

Android Pay allows users of mobile phones equipped with Google's mobile operating system, Android, to upload credit or debit card to a mobile wallet on their phone.

Android Pay will be made available for U.S. Android users in the upcoming months. The service will let users pay for merchandise at more than 700,000 stores in the U.S. Participating retailers include McDonald's, Macy's, Best Buy, Walgreen and Whole Foods.

As part of security measures, Android Pay will incorporate fingerprint biometrics.

The new service in line with Google striving to extend Android's reach across a range of platforms.

Google also unveiled Project Brillo, a range of technologies to connect household items to the Web. The platform aims to make it simpler for developers to build applications for everyday devices. The company also announced a system called Weave to help with communication between devices.
