Google Self-Driving Vehicles Involved In 11 Minor Accidents In 6 Years

(RTTNews) - Google Inc. (GOOGL, GOOG) said its self-driving vehicles were involved in 11 minor accidents in the past six years that they have test-driven. However, the vehicles were not to blame for the incidents that included light damage and no injuries, the company added.

According to the company, most of the incidents occurred when the cars were hit from behind. Some of these were on the freeway while some were at traffic lights.

"We're thinking a lot about how to measure our progress and our impact on road safety," Chris Urmson, director of Google's self-driving car program, said in a post on technology news website Backchannel on blog platform Medium.

"Over the 6 years since we started the project, we've been involved in 11 minor accidents (light damage, no injuries) during those 1.7 million miles of autonomous and manual driving with our safety drivers behind the wheel, and not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident," he noted.
