Florida Governor and Cabinet Approve FPL Turkey Point Plant Expansion

    Business Editors

JUNO BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 2005--Florida Power & Light Company announced today that the governor and Cabinet approved the company's Turkey Point power plant expansion proposal for southern Miami-Dade County. Construction will begin this spring on the new unit, which is due to be operational in 2007.
"We are very pleased with the governor and Cabinet's decision as well as with the thorough reviews and support given the project by numerous federal, state and local agencies, including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the South Florida Water Management District, the Florida Public Service Commission, Miami-Dade County, the National Park Service, the Army Corps of Engineers and others," said FPL President Armando Olivera.
"The plant helps FPL keep up with customer growth, and its proximity to large population centers in Miami-Dade enhances the reliability of the electric grid," Olivera said.
FPL's Turkey Point expansion will add a $600-million natural gas-fired combined-cycle generating unit to its existing 11,000-acre Turkey Point plant site near Florida City. The 1,150-megawatt plant will provide enough power to serve the equivalent of 230,000 homes and businesses beginning in 2007.
