UPDATE: Remediation Underway Following Diesel Leak in Sarnia

SARNIA, ON, Sept. 21, 2013 /CNW/ - Sun-Canadian Pipe Line confirms remediation plans are underway to repair the damage surrounding a pipeline leak which occurred on Tuesday, September 10.

Traffic management plans are in place to ensure Vidal Street in Sarnia partially re-opens to the public beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, September 23.  The company worked with the City of Sarnia, regulators and a number of contractors to ensure the road could re-open following a series of soil and ground water analyses.

"Our crews are working hard over the weekend to ensure the road is open on Monday morning," said Tony Waters, General Manager of Sun-Canadian Pipe Line. "As part of our remediation plan we will also continue sampling the water and soil, providing results to the regulators for assessment."

An independent contractor has been brought on to complete an assessment of the soil and vegetation near the site. Containment and cleanup efforts on the river remain successful, despite heavy rainfall.

A thorough investigation will be conducted by Sun-Canadian Pipe Line, as well as an independent third party who will report their findings to the Ministry of Environment to understand the cause of the incident and what measures need to be taken to prevent a future recurrence.

Sun-Canadian Pipe Line is focused on an efficient clean up response while minimizing the impact to surrounding communities. "We would like to thank these communities for their patience, and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused," said Waters.

Sun-Canadian thanks all involved in the mutual aid response and recovery efforts, including the municipalities, local agencies and industry.
