An OCT system, much like an IVUS system, consists of a catheter connected to a console. The console receives the data from the disposable catheter, processes it and displays the result. Because space in catheterization laboratories (cath labs) is always limited, the consoles must be fairly compact and are usually portable.

While IVUS, computed tomography (CT) and X-ray imaging are already established imaging modalities that are present in a large percentage of cath labs, OCT is relatively new. The cost of the consoles and, to a lesser extent, the need to fit yet another piece of equipment into crowded cath labs, has the potential to initially limit growth in the OCT device market.
