silex Selects Freescale's XS110 Chipset for UWB miniPCI Module; First Japanese Vendor to Leverage UWB Technology for U.S. Products
Leveraging Freescale's commercially available direct sequence UWB(DS-UWB) chipset, silex, a leading Japanese company and provider ofdevice-to-device networking products worldwide, will showcase theminiPCI module at the Freescale Technology Forum held this week inTokyo.
Freescale's DS-UWB solutions are shipping to OEM customersworldwide for a variety of consumer electronics and computingproducts. According to West Technology Research Solutions, the overallDS-UWB component market is expected to reach $482 million (USD) by2010 with initial deployment occurring in consumer entertainment,communications, and computing in the personal area network (PAN)arena. By 2009, annual shipments for consumer electronics applicationsalone are expected to reach 38 million units, according to the firm'sQ3 2005 report.
"Freescale provides a turnkey solution for developers seeking toincorporate Freescale's commercial UWB into their consumer electronicproducts," said Martin Rofheart, director of the Ultra-WidebandOperation at Freescale. "Using our UWB development kit, silex was ableto quickly and easily develop a miniPCI module that meets FCCrequirements for commercial use in the U.S. And, as Japan continues todraft its regulatory policy for UWB, we look forward to providing thesame turnkey solution for products sold in Japan."
The Freescale XS110 UWB chipset used in the silex miniPCI moduleprovides a data rate of 110 Mbps to wirelessly stream video, audio anddata at a range of up to 20 meters.
"Freescale's XS110 UWB chipset is both commercially available andFCC certified, which allows us to add a proven wireless solution toour peripheral products with mini-PCI modules," said Katsuhiro Yagi,silex UWB project manager. "The mini-PCI is a great first milestone inour strategy to be a leading UWB embedded technology provider."
The UWB-enabled module fits the standard miniPCI form factor.silex intends to use the module in networking products for the U.S.market. The availability of UWB-enabled consumer products for Japan issubject to regulatory processes currently underway by Japan's Ministryof Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC).
