EXPERT ALERTS:
Community-Oriented Policing to Prevent Terrorism and Extreme Violence
David Dial
Assistant Professor, Chair of Criminal Justice
Aurora University
"With terrorism and extreme violence as an ever-increasing threat worldwide, we must be certain to have a strong Department of Homeland Security, reinforced by law enforcement at the local and state level. Policing begins in the community, and when police departments adapt to the changing technologies and neighborhood demographics, they will strengthen community trust and create an even safer United States."
Prior to becoming the director of Aurora University's Criminal Justice program in 2012, Dial held a 45-year career in law enforcement. His tenure highlighted the importance of technology and adaptability in law enforcement. He specializes in community-oriented policing, law enforcement management, leadership, and intelligence-led policing. He teaches courses on homeland security, policing America and terrorism. He received an M.A. in Homeland Security and Defense from the US Naval Postgraduate School, an M.P.A. from the University of Colorado, and a bachelor's degree from San Jose State College. He also graduated from the Senior Management Institute for Police sponsored by the Police Executive Research Forum. He has served in leadership roles with a number of professional associations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Policy (Community Policing Committee Member), former president of Police Futurists International and former president of the DuPage County Police Chief's Association. He is based out of Aurora, Ill.

Persuasion and Rhetoric in Today's Society
Toby J. Arquette
Executive Director, Dunham School of Business and Public Policy; Associate Professor of Communication
Aurora University
"There are many ways to be persuasive as a speaker, but the most common are appeals to logic, emotion, and speaker credibility or authority. While I teach these tactics to my students, I also instill a respect for civility and professionalism in dialogue. Particularly in today's society, it is critical for these students to learn to debate, without characterizing the opposing view as 'false' or as an adversary."
Dr. Arquette is available to discuss persuasion and rhetorical studies, which includes argumentation and debate and persuasion and consumer culture, among other topics. He specializes in strategic communication, communication research analysis, digital and social media, and interpersonal/group communication. Arquette can also speak to emerging trends in digital and social media.
Dr. Arquette is a recipient of the Miller Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Communication Association. He is also a recipient of the Social Science Research Council Award from the IT and Global Conflict group. While a faculty member, Dr. Arquette has served as the chair of the Department of Communication, director of the Aurora University Honors Program, and chair of the Aurora University Faculty Senate. He received a Ph.D. in Communication from Northwestern University, a master's degree in communication studies from Baylor University, and a bachelor's degree in liberal arts (economics) from Wayne State University. He is based in Aurora, Ill.

New FINRA and State Rules Address Financial Exploitation of Senior Investors
Andrew M. Hartnett
Securities & Financial Services Attorney, Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. (St. Louis)
Former Missouri Commissioner of Securities (2013-2016)
Former Chief of Staff to the Missouri Attorney General
Former Assistant Attorney General in Missouri's Consumer Protection Division
"A new set of Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) rules – recently approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and due to go into effect early next year – along with various state laws, are addressing risks of financial exploitation of senior investors in meaningful ways. The new FINRA rules would allow broker-dealers to delay disbursements of funds or securities when elder exploitation was suspected. Under the new FINRA rules, broker-dealers also would be required to make 'reasonable efforts' to get contact information for a trusted contact person."
Hartnett, who was Missouri's Commissioner of Securities when the state passed similar rules a couple of years ago, said that a dozen or so other states have had legislation filed this year with similar proposals. Hartnett is able to discuss the new FINRA rules and how they compare to similar regulations in various states, as well as how investment firms can utilize these tools to help protect senior investors from abuse: "This is an important area nationwide for changes in the law to help protect senior investors as the senior population continues to grow and seniors are living longer lives."

Adolescents and Political Activism
Fred McKenzie, Ph.D.
Executive Director of the School of Social Work, Doctor of Social Work Program
Aurora University
"Adolescents are an entirely unique group -- no longer children, yet not quite adults. Through a concerted effort to study the neurological development of young adults, we are able to understand larger societal trends, ranging from the growing youth participation in peaceful marches and demonstrations, to the unfortunate prevalence of violence in schools."
Dr. McKenzie is available to discuss his comprehensive expertise on adolescents. His book, "Theory and Practice with Adolescents: An Applied Approach," focuses on adolescents as an individual age group of clinical study. In addition to this topic, Dr. McKenzie can speak to the impact of brain and emotional development on possible motivations inherent in adolescent development in general, youth participation in civil movements, violence in schools, refugee relations and faith in the social work profession. He received a Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work from Loyola University of Chicago in 1995, a Master of Social Work from George Williams College in 1982, and a Bachelor of Arts from George Williams in 1973. He is based in Aurora, Ill.

The Mainstreaming of Collegiate E-Sports
Jordan Bass
Associate Professor of Sport Management
University of Kansas
"The announcement that Utah is adding a varsity e-sports program is a major step toward the mainstreaming of collegiate e-sports. Hundreds of universities across the country host e-sports teams in some capacity, but a Power Five school adding e-sports to its varsity programs will only help spur the other power conference schools to do the same."
Bass can discuss the University of Utah's announcement that it will add a varsity e-sports program, e-sports in general, e-sports in Power Five athletic departments, gaming, e-sports participants' experiences and more.
