National Vocal Competition Finds a 'Juhl'

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Singing in front of a sold-out crowd outside Chicago, Ill., Gary Juhl brought the house to their feet and walked away a champion last weekend. The Hill Country Retreat by Del Webb resident, 59, sang the Roy Orbison classic, Crying, to make it to the final five where he sang a medley of American anthems a cappella to win the inaugural Del Webb Stand Up & Sing crown.

Following local competitions at Del Webb communities across the country, 12 finalists were flown to the Chicagoland area where they performed in front of a standing-room only crowd at Sun City Huntley, in Huntley, Ill. Consisting of two rounds, the 12 senior singers first sang songs of their choice with musical accompaniment. Four judges scored the contestants and the top five singers advanced to the second round where they sang a song of their choice a cappella.

Juhl kicked off the competition and quickly became a crowd favorite. Drawing comparisons to the late, great Orbison himself, Juhl's rendition of Crying was emotional and inspiring. He was awarded with a standing ovation from the crowd.

Following performances by the 11 other contestants, the four judges tallied up the scores and five singers were announced to move to the second, and final, round. Juhl was joined by Neil Arena from Potomac Green by Del Webb (Ashburn, Va.), Lou Buchignani from Sierra Canyon by Del Webb (Reno, Nev.), Jerry Moskowitz from Anthem Ranch by Del Webb (Broomfield, Colo.), and Ray Thomas from Sun City Huntley.

The second round required a cappella performances and the bar was raised further by the competitors. All five contestants drew standing ovations for their performances. When the judges announced the winners, second runner-up was Jerry Moskowitz, first runner-up was Ray Thomas, and Juhl walked away with the champion's trophy and a $1,000 cash prize.

The seven additional finalists included: Patricia Hahto, Shorewood Glen by Del Webb in Shorewood, Ill. Rev. Ann Jefferson, Sun City Aliante in Las Vegas, Nev. David Lasher, Sweetwater by Del Webb in Jacksonville, Fla. Patricia Melvin, Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio, Calif. Bruce Miller, Sun City Carolina Lakes in Indian Land, S.C. Cora Peters, Solera at Apple Valley in Apple Valley, Calif. Ira Temchin, Wanaque Reserve by Del Webb in Wanaque, N.J.

With more than 50 Del Webb communities in 20 states, hundreds of Del Webb residents representing nine states participated in the competition. More than 58,000 Del Webb residents had the opportunity to watch the performances or compete at the various venues. Tickets for the final event were snapped up in less than a day through a national call-in system available to all Del Webb communities across the country.
