Nasdaq Falls Firmly Into The Red, Dow And S&P 500 Posting Modest Losses

(RTTNews) - After initially showing a lack of direction, stocks have moved mostly lower over the course of the trading day on Monday. Selling pressure has remained relatively subdued, however, limiting the downside for the markets.

Internet stocks have shown a significant move to the downside over the course of the session, contributing to a notable pullback by the tech-heavy Nasdaq. The Dow Jones Internet Index has fallen by 1.2 percent after ending the previous session at a two-month closing high.

Monster Worldwide (MWW), Baidu (BIDU) and Amazon (AMZN) are turning in some of the internet sector's worst performances.

Significant weakness has also emerged among natural gas stocks, as reflected by the 1.2 percent loss being posted by the NYSE Arca Natural Gas Index. The weakness in the sector comes despite an increase by the price of natural gas.

Gold, electronic storage, and semiconductor stocks have also come under pressure on the day, while strength remains visible among utilities stocks.

The major averages have all slid into negative territory, although the Nasdaq is underperforming its counterparts. While the Nasdaq is down 25.05 points or 0.5 percent at 4,663.49, the Dow is down 11.87 points or 0.1 percent at 17,622.87 and the S&P 500 is down 3.27 points or 0.2 percent at 2,036.55.
