Harmonic Enables GuangXi Cable to Expand Service While Increasing Flexibility and Efficiency Upgrade Uses Existing SDH Network to Centrally Distribute Regionalized Digital Television Services
Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) today announced that GuangXi Broadcast Network Information Co., Ltd. (GuangXi Cable) has expanded its digital television service using Harmonic headend and networking solutions. The upgraded service utilizes Harmonic's high-performance DiviCom(R) encoding solutions to produce superior quality digital video and the Broadcast Network Gateway(TM) (BNG) to securely increase the reach of the digital TV service. GuangXi Cable, as a result, is able to improve its operating efficiencies, flexibility and revenue potential by regionalizing the program line-up at the main headend then distributing the content over an existing SDH backbone.
In order to extend its service to the 14 regional cities within the province, GuangXi Cable has deployed Harmonic's BNG to provide a seamless interface between its main headend, existing SDH network and local headends. The compression efficiency of the DiviCom encoders coupled with the flexibility of the BNG makes it possible to centrally combine and deliver programming according to the unique requirements of each service area. In addition, the new Harmonic-based infrastructure enables GuangXi Cable to efficiently and cost-effectively add channels at either the main headend or the local level. Locally encoded content can, as needed, be sent to the main headend for redistribution to other areas.
"Since the very successful launch of our Harmonic-based digital television service in Nanning, we have looked for an economical way to extend this service throughout GuangXi Province, particularly for areas with a population size that does not currently justify a full digital headend," said Mrs. Jing Yang, Vice Director of Engineering, Planning and Construction at GuangXi Broadcast Network Information Co., Ltd. "Harmonic's creative solution, which uses our existing SDH network, made it very easy and enables us to cost-effectively meet the unique requirements of each service area. We now have a platform that will fully support our current broadcast and future on-demand services."
"Harmonic recognized long ago that each customer's network is unique, and because of this, we provide flexible solutions that fit seamlessly into their environment rather than force them to re-architect their infrastructure to gain the full value of their investment," said Dr. Yaron Simler, President of the Convergent Systems Division of Harmonic Inc. "We are proud to have been selected not only to build the first digital TV service in GuangXi Province but also to help GuangXi Cable expand its business opportunities. The upgraded infrastructure is highly extensible and will provide further efficiencies when the time comes to expand the locally encoded TV channels and introduce advanced video services. GuangXi Cable is yet another example of how Harmonic has achieved success by serving the unique needs of our customers."
To secure the transmission of digital content over the backbone and enable the conditional access to pay-TV services, GuangXi Cable is using the BNG's DVB scrambling capability. At each local headend, a BNG receives the content via the SDH network, multiplexes and scrambles locally encoded video content, and then QAM modulates the transport stream for distribution to subscriber homes over the HFC access network. This upgraded and secure infrastructure lays a solid foundation for the implementation of other value-added digital television services such as video-on-demand, which requires high levels of content protection.
Using Harmonic's NMX Digital Service Manager(TM), GuangXi Cable is able to monitor and control its digital headend environment and network from a single console. NMX also permits local system operators to manage their digital video systems -- including both Harmonic and third party equipment -- simplifying the task of adding new digital services and equipment.
