CES 2014: T-Mobile Will Pay Up To $350 In Early Termination Fees

(RTTNews) - T-Mobile U.S. has made big waves at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, unveiling a bold new plan to steal customers from its larger rivals.

With its "Uncarrier 4.0? program, T-Mobile is offering to pay up to $350 in Early Termination Fees for customers willing to make the switch from Sprint, AT&T and Verizon.

Customers from the big three carriers can trade-in their working phones and tablets at any participating T-Mobile location, switch their numbers over and receive a credit, based on the value of their device, which can be used towards a new device purchase.

The maximum trade-in value for devices is $300 per line.

"78 percent of customers said they'd switch if someone paid their fee," said T-Mobile's John Legere, who made headlines earlier in the week by crashing AT&T's big corporate event at CES.

The move comes just five days after larger rival AT&T offered $200 for similar carrier switching.

"AT&T customers, come over to this plan, and if it doesn't work, they'll pay you to come back, it's beautiful," he continued.

Legere touted T-Mobile's strong fourth quarter results as evidence that the company is making strides.

The fourth quarter was the third consecutive quarter of over 1 million total net customer additions for the company.

"Our Un-carrier moves have clearly upended this industry. Over the past 12 months, 4.4 million customers have come to T-Mobile in response to greater flexibility and choice. We have clearly struck a chord with customers and will continue to look for ways to expand on that in 2014," Legere said.

Legere had strong words for his rivals, calling Sprint ""a pile of spectrum waiting to be turned into a capability."

"Right now, their network is completely horrible...I would just summarize them as an impaired brand right now with a network capability that won't be here for a while."

On AT&T, Leger said "these are fat cats that can't move."
