Bottomline Technologies Executive Named to LEDES Oversight Committee

    PORTSMOUTH, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2005--

Electronic Invoicing Expert to Also Head Subcommittee on Beta Standard for International Legal Electronic Data Exchange

Bottomline Technologies (NASDAQ: EPAY), a leading global technology provider of financial Business Process Management (fBPM) software and managed services, today announced that Robert K. Mullen has been elected to serve as Vice President of the LEDES Oversight Committee (LOC) and Chairman of the group's International Standards Feedback Subcommittee. The independent group, comprised of law firms, corporations, consultants and IT suppliers, aims to develop and promote a Legal Electronic Data Exchange Standard, popularly known as LEDES, for electronic billing within the legal industry.
An expert on legal e-billing practices and technology, Mullen joined Bottomline Technologies in 2000 from eVelocity, a pioneering legal e-billing services provider. A member of the product team that helped to lead the growth of the electronic invoicing market, Mullen was instrumental in the industry's first deployments of the technology within corporate legal departments of Fortune 1000 accounts. Today he consults exclusively to customers of Legal Exchange(R), Bottomline's Web-based legal spend management solution.
"As a long-time advocate and active contributor in the development of standards for paperless invoicing, Bob brings a wealth of experience to this elected position," said Aaron Van Nice, Merrill Lynch & Co. and Chairman of the LOC Executive Committee. "With increasing globalization of corporate entities and the demand for international legal services, the year ahead is marked by the important task of extending LEDES to the international legal community. Bob's efforts on behalf of the committee will be integral to this important effort."
To date LEDES has been successful in unifying the U.S. legal industry around a common format for the exchange of electronic invoice data. Developed initially by PricewaterhouseCoopers, LEDES is now managed by a vendor-neutral LEDES Oversight Committee (LOC). To accommodate a growing number of EU law firms required to submit invoices electronically, in February 2005 the LOC developed a revised standard based on the successful LEDES 98B standard, previously tested and released by the U.K.-based Legal IT Innovators Group (LITIG).
Global standards for data exchange allow corporations to receive law firm invoices electronically and to review, approve or reject, and pay these invoices much more quickly while streamlining the invoice handling process. It is expected that the creation of an international standard will enable the international community to maximize the business value of legal electronic invoicing.
In addition to his executive committee responsibilities, Mullen will oversee the subcommittee responsible for evaluating the new international standard. The group will collect feedback through February 2006, when the standard is expected to receive full committee approval.

About the LEDES Oversight Committee (LOC)

The LOC is a voluntary body consisting of representatives from the legal industry. It is the goal of the LOC that LEDES be an open standard which caters to no one organization or group of organizations and that LEDES be the single standard used for all billing within the legal industry. PricewaterhouseCoopers originally developed LEDES but it is now managed by the LOC. To find out more go to http://www.ledes.org.
