Uncover your blankets. It's been a long time since your horses needed blankets for winter turnout. Now is the time to take them out of storage, wash them, and make sure they still fit the horses that need them. Some horses will have grown their own warm coats for the winter by mid-November and won't need a blanket, but older horses or horses with specific health issues will surely need a blanket.

Prep water sources. If your horses drink from heated water sources during the colder months, check ahead of time on the heaters—whether they are trough heaters, heated buckets, or automatic watering systems. Test the heaters and double check that power cords have no cracks or other signs of wear. The water should be warm to the touch.

Dodge the drafts. While it is important to make sure that your stable has proper ventilation, you don't want any drafts sneaking in to affect your horses. Check all doorways and windows for drafts, and insulate where necessary. However, it is also important to open a window for short times during the day to create some air circulation—especially while cleaning stalls or opening hay bales.

Stock your hay. Don't run out of hay during the long winter months. Make sure you have plenty  stored away from the harsh winter elements, loosely stacked so the air can blow between bales.

Shovel that snow. If you live in an area that receives a good deal of snow, make sure you have plenty of shovels and blowers on hand. Store your farm equipment to make room for any snow plowing. And, have a bucket of sand on hand to spread on ice-coated paths and doorways.
