Assisi Animal Health Lists Four Ways to Prepare Your Pet for New Year's Eve

Confine your pet. When a pet is frightened, it usually has a favorite hiding place. Many pets will seek their crate when anxious, but if your pet does not like to be crated, place it in a room where it cannot cause any damage to the room or harm itself.

Distract your pet. Use some calming music to distract your pet. It may help mask the loud noises that often accompany New Year's Eve. Classical music should do the trick. Or, if you watch TV, turn on the TV since your pet is already accustomed to the sound. Try distracting your pet with a brand-new toy. If fear of noise is a common factor in your dog's life, consult with your vet to acquire a calming drug. There are many good ones on the market that wear off quickly.

Calm your pet. Lavender can calm your dogs in times of anxiety. Let your dog smell lavender oil by spraying it on your dog's bed or favorite blanket. Or, you can use it on its skin, but make sure it is Lavendula officinalis or Lavendula augustifolia.

Exercise your pet. Take your dog out to a park or for a walk or a good run. Make sure he or she gets as much exercise as possible. Play with your cat by pointing laser wands for it to chase, or give it a ball to bat around. Whether it's a cat or dog, keep your pet moving for as long as possible before the evening begins, in the hopes that it will be well exercised and able to cope with the noise.
