Amidst Ongoing Veteran Unemployment and Countless Dogs Being Euphonized in Our Shelters, Universal K9 Offers Hope
SAN ANTONIO, Jan. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Despite an overall decline, veteran unemployment in the US remains higher than the national average, but Universal K9, a nonprofit organization, offers hope to veterans and their families by rescuing dogs, training them for various law enforcement activities and donating them to veterans helping them gain employment.
According to the US Department of Labor, unemployment for US veterans dropped to 4.8% in November 2016, with unemployment for 18-24-year-old veterans at 11.7%. In comparison, the overall US unemployment rate for the same period was 4.6%. While declining, those numbers remain a source of alarm.
Universal K9 offers two solutions for veterans with the GI Bill to learn trades and embark on a new career, or start their own business. Both programs are VA approved and tie into growing demand within the law enforcement sector, security industry and within government agencies.
The Dual Purpose Canine Handler course is an 80-hour program focused on canine handler training, and results in an industry-recognized certificate of completion and competency. Any veteran completing this course is eligible to receive a free single purpose detection canine. For law enforcement only, graduates are eligible for a dual purpose patrol and detection canine.
Rodney Dickenson, a graduate of the Dual Purpose Canine Handler course, reported, "The training was intensive, but rewarding. I came out with everything I needed to go to work as a handler for my local police department."
Universal K9 also offers a Canine Trainer/Instructor course. This program requires 400 hours of instruction (10 weeks), and prepares veterans to become canine trainers working with law enforcement agencies, as a government contractor or with security firms. Course completion results in an industry-recognized certificate.
Richard Cook completed the instructor course, and said, "Finding this course was one of the best things to happen to me after leaving the military."
