Lightwave Logic Successfully Demonstrates Operating Silicon Organic Hybrid (SOH) Prototype Modulator

NEWARK, Del., Oct. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Lightwave Logic, Inc. (OTCQB: LWLG), a technology company focused on the development of a Next Generation Non Linear Optical Polymer Materials Platform for applications in high speed fiber-optic data communications and optical computing, announced today that the combined efforts of Lightwave Logic's chemists and material system with a third party research group have resulted in the successful fabrication of an operating SOH slot waveguide modulator.  The device utilizes an existing modulator structure with one of Lightwave's proprietary electro-optic polymer material systems as the enabling material layer.  This first-generation device has achieved greater electro-optical activity and dramatically lower drive voltage than industry standard modulators based on inorganic materials.

Silicon Organic Hybrid (SOH) technology is a newly emerging field that combines the efficiency of silicon photonics with the power and versatility of organic nonlinear electro-optical materials.
In an SOH modulator, the optical signal is guided by a silicon waveguide structure with an organic polymer cladding layer above the waveguide to provide the electro-optic effect.

Tom Zelibor, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lightwave Logic commented, "These initial results constitute a truly significant event for our Company as it proves that our materials can work in photonic devices.  Importantly, this prototype represents a solid starting point from which we continue to improve performance characteristics.  I look forward to updating everyone on this and other technological and business developments on a shareholder call we intend to have before the end of the year.

"As Lightwave Logic now begins to implement Silicon Organic Hybrid technology into other device structures for specific applications, it is worth noting that we are addressing multi-billion dollar markets.   The photonic transceiver market alone is expected to reach $5.1 billion by 2017 and cloud computing is only one application."

Lou Bintz, Lightwave Logic's Vice President of Product Development stated, "The very short device length opens the door to extremely high modulation speeds and integrated optical circuit architectures.  We are vigorously pursuing our chemistry development and fully expect accelerating improvement in our proprietary electro-optic polymer thin film products."
